Five Colleges Visit

Tin Hau Temple became a classroom for educators from Five Colleges, Inc. - a consortium of five different colleges in Massachusetts: Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and University of Massachusetts Amherst. Led by Dr. Anne Prescott, Director of the Center for East Asian Studies, she brought a team of 17 other teachers on their "Ties that Bind: Honolulu Summer Institute". Here they got a first-hand look at Pre-Cultural Revolution Chinese religion and culture brought to Hawaii by Chinese immigrants in the late 1800s. Afterwards, the group was given a pop quiz to test their new-found knowledge. Needless to say they passed with flying colors. Dr. Prescott remarked, "several members of the group mentioned how much they learned" and "the knowledge they gained will make its way into their teaching".
